Bourgeois Pride and Princely Splendour.
Costumes from the Sixteenth to Eighteenth Century
20 April - 2 November 2008
daily 2.00 p.m. - 5.30 p.m.
The exhibition presents important historic costumes from the collections of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, which were entrusted to the Abegg-Stiftung for conservation. Altogether twenty-seven garments reveal the high art of tailoring, elaborate decorations and fashionable thrills. Among the highlights are a sixteenth-century princely costume in several parts and a unique collection of seventeenth-century bourgeois upper garments.

Made of dark red silk this doublet is embellished with applied borders. To heighten the attractive, three-dimensional decorative effect even further slanted slashes were cut into the silk fabric in regular intervals.
