Furnishing Textiles of the 18th Century
24 April 13 November 2005
daily 2 p.m. 5.30 p.m.
The temporary exhibition presents luxurious decorative textiles of the kind used to furnish the rooms of grand eighteenth-century residences. Splendid, intricately patterned silk fabrics were used to make wall hangings, curtains, bed-decorations, upholstery and firescreens for aristocratic patrons. Embroidery, leather and painted silks from China were also fashionable in the interior decor of the elite.
