English Splendour from a Spanish Cathedral
A Medieval Cope at the Abegg-Stiftung

From 7 September to 13 November 2005 the Abegg-Stiftung in Riggisberg is exhibiting a medieval cope from Vic in Spain which was treated in its conservation workshop. This vestment, made of red silk velvet and ornately decorated by English embroiders, is among the most splendid and precious garments of the late Middle Ages. At that time English gold and silk embroideries were luxury goods and status symbols coveted throughout Europe. This cope entered Vic cathedrals treasury as a gift of Bishop Ramon de Bellera, who headed the bishopric from 1352 to 1377.
After the exhibition at the Abegg-Stiftung the cope will be returned to the Museu Episcopal in Vic.
