Begegnung von Heidentum und Christentum im spätantiken Ägypten
(Paganism and Christianity meet in Egypt of late antiquity)
Antiquity and Christianity met in a particularly spectacular manner in Egypt. The testimonies and sources of this encounter and conflict will be found in different bodies of literature and archeology. The fabrics, which have been conserved, sometimes also convey an impression of these events. The background to the Dionysos hanging in the Abegg Foundation is a good example. Specialists, who wish to throw light on the spiritual and cultural, historical relationships underlying the change of epoch in Egypt of late antiquity, experience a growing need for interdisciplinary contact with neighbouring sciences.

Stimulated by the cultural historical context of the Dionysos hanging, a dozen scholars of classical and early Christian archeology, the Byzantine period, Coptology, Coptic textile science, classical philology and religious science met at a symposium in Riggisberg. This volume presents 11 contributions in an extended and richly illustrated form. It will appeal to persons interested in these disciplines, including theologians, art historians and everyone with an interest in late Greco-Roman antiquity and the early days of Eastern Christianity.
