			RIGGISBERGER BERICHTE, Volume 4 Tüchleinmalereien in Zittau und Riggisberg (Cloth painting in Zittau and Riggisberg) With the two Zittau lenten cloths of 1472 and 1573, a procession banner from East Prussia and a gripping portrayal of Christ’s agony, this publication contains a detailed tribute for the first time to four unique cloth paintings. The linen cloths painted in tempera colours constitute a special art form because the articles concerned are not essentially illustrations, but painted textile objects for everyday use. The fact that these are nevertheless outstanding works of art is impressively documented by the older large Zittau lenten cloth. In 90 individually illustrated sections, this tells the history of salvation from the Creation of the world to the Last Judgement. The late medieval Agony of Christ, which was donated to the Abegg Foundation in 1993, is particularly impressive, as it is a gothic banner painted on both sides illustrating Christ and Mary flanked by the coats of arms of the three cities of Danzig, Elbing and Königsberg. The occasion for the publication of this book was the complex conservation of the two impressive lenten cloths from the State Museum of Zittau which were put on show at the temporary exhibition in Riggisberg in 1995, together with two previously completely hitherto unknown small cloth paintings from the Foundation’s own collection.
