Islamische Textilkunst des Mittelalters: Aktuelle Probleme
(Islamic textile art of the Middle Ages: current problems)
Textile historians and Islamic scientists explain the general historical background and the economic conditions prevailing in the days of the Fatimids. They trace the original function of Islamic textiles in medieval documents and literary works of the Orient. Linguistic and epigraphic studies of the woven or embroidered inscriptions investigate the content and meaning of the aphorisms, which are often quoted. Finally, technical weaving problems of individual fabrics are illustrated and characteristic textile groups analyzed. The book contains the records, reflecting the latest state of knowledge, of an interdisciplinary colloquium held in November 1995 and is also a supplement to the first large catalogue of the Abegg Foundations collection of "Medieval textiles I.
