RIGGISBERGER BERICHTE, Volume 7

Leinendamaste
Produktionszentren und Sammlungen
(Linen damaskscentres of production and collections)

The Abegg Foundation holds one of the most important collections of white linen damasks from the 16th to the 19th century, in terms of quality and quantity. The core of the collection consists of the former Dutch private collection of C. A. Burgers and J. G. du Preez. In 1997 the Abegg Foundation dedicated a special exhibition and international colloquium to these fascinatingly varied textiles. In this volume of Riggisberger Berichte the colloquium papers are made available to the general public. Their subject matter ranges from art historical discussions on the oldest surviving linen damasks from the first half of the 16th century to select production centres and countries, as well as the analysis of historic written sources and inventories, and the history of the collections and their study. The relevant holdings in Riggisberg are discussed in depth; the book is therefore also an introduction to their riches and quality.
