18th-Century Silks
The Industries of England and Northern Europe
Research into the production of silks, which had become a luxury item in the 18th century, is especially important in England where exceptionally good source material, with a great many dated and signed design drawings, enables us to follow the stylistic development of these precious garment fabrics. English silks therefore form the basis for the classification of production elsewhere in Europe, as fashion in the early 18th century in Western Europe and in the North American seaports crossed borders (as it does today) and an exchange of fashion ideas was an everyday experience. In 1998 the Abegg Foundation organized a scientific colloquium on this topic. The lectures given at this occasion are made accessible to a wider public through this richly illustrated publication. It not only highlights the artistic and commercial impact of the distribution of English luxury fabrics, but also examines the artistic, and economic, output of the competition from the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and Brandenburg-Prussia, which was suspicionsly taken into account in England.
