| Treasures from the Abegg Foundation Catherine Depierraz This slender volume presents a selection of precious pieces from the Abegg Foundations collection: textiles and other works of applied art covering a period from the sixth millennium BC to the late nineteenth century AD. Colour illustrations show the splendour of Chinese and Central Asian weaving and embroidery, the brilliance of medieval enamelwork, and the refinement of Baroque silks. Each piece is described in detail, together with an explanation of its significance, while information on the techniques used and the historical context gives the reader a deeper understanding of these works of art. Included in the small handbook are the Abegg Foundations highlights such as the wall hangings from late classical antiquity, the medieval chasuble of Saint Vitalis from Salzburg, and paintings by Rogier van der Weyden, Sandro Botticelli and Paul Cézanne as well as less well-known works from the ancient world, medieval Europe, the Renaissance and the Baroque, some of which are here presented to a wide audience for the first time. An up-to-date overview of the rich holdings of the Abegg Foundation! Excerpt |
