Text in English

The richly illustrated exhibition catalogue presents unique silk garments and accessories of the Liao-dynasty (907 - 1125). These include several gowns, jackets, trousers and skirts as well as an elaborate headdress, rich ornamental bows and silk boots. Each object is discussed in depth, accompanied by technical analyses, drawings and many colour illustrations. The results of dyestuff-, material and C14-analyses are presented. In the introductory chapters provenance, dating as well as artistic and technical qualities are treated. Questions regarding the coherence of the group of garments, their manner of wear and the person for whom they were originally intended are addressed. A separate chapter is devoted to the extensive conservation work and the insights gained from it. The significance of textiles of Liao culture and the present state of research are discussed in individual essays.
